biography

The Rose Vaughan Trio was founded in 1990 with Cathy Porter and Pam Mason to present the sparkling original songs of singer/songwriter Rose Vaughan. Their music draws on elements of folk, jazz and pop to create the sensitive distinctive sound which has earned them high praise and a permanent spot in Canadian music. Rose’s evocative lyrics and sophisticated melodies combine gracefully with Cathy’s inventive arrangements and intuitive playing on piano, flute, percussion and accordian. During the 1990’s the Rose Vaughan Trio toured folk clubs, theatres and festivals from the Maritimes through Ontario to enthusiastic response. The Trio’s music has received regular airplay throughout Canada, and in the USA, England, Germany, Australia and South Africa. They have been heard, by way of CBC Radio, in Bosnia, Croatia, Rwanda, Haiti, Belgium and the Netherlands.

In 1996, cellist Hilary Brown replaced bassist Pam Mason, and the Trio performed over forty House Concerts during a highly successful three month tour, after which Rose and Cathy took a well-deserved break from music business. After a seven year hiatus, the band re-emerged with the tasteful addition of Reese Nearing on fretless bass and acoustic guitar. Reese brought a refined balance to the sensitive melodies and arrangements which have always been a hallmark of the Trio. Together they performed and recorded the 2003 release A Winter's Tide.

Although the band is no longer touring, Cathy and Rose are currently working on the arranging of a new collection of songs for the next CD. When it is completed, it will be available through this website.
